Water Control Structure 130 Reconstruction, City of North Port
Approved: $2,042,000
Funds will support the design and construction of a replacement for Water Control Structure 130, a four-gated structure located in North Port. This project will support approximately 15,745 citizens living in the service area.

Myakkahatchee Creek Bridge Reconstruction, City of North Port
Approved: $10,314,000

Bridge at North Port Blvd and Cocoplum Reconstruction, City of North Port
Approved: $106,000
Funds will support the full rehabilitation of the bridge, required to ensure the structure’s integrity and to mitigate any future storm impacts.

Sarasota Bay Watershed Flood and Water Quality Improvements, City of Sarasota
Approved: $1,200,000
Funds will support upsizing approximately 2,400 linear feet of existing stormwater pipes, thereby improving the system's capability to handle large volumes of runoff and reduce the incidence of flooding. This project aims to address challenges by enhancing the capacity of the current stormwater management system and includes the installation of a nutrient-separating baffle box. The project will aim to alleviate flooding, significantly enhance the quality of water entering Whitaker Bayou, protect the environmental health of the Sarasota Bay Watershed and ensure the resilience of local water bodies.

South River Road Widening from U.S. 41 to Winchester Blvd, Sarasota County
Approved: $15,000,000 (+ $25,000,000 already outlined in HUD-approved Action Plan)
Funds will support the widening and elevation of approximately four miles of the existing two-lane undivided South River Road from U.S. 41 to Winchester Boulevard. This will result in four 12-foot-wide thru-lanes within a rural divided section with inside and outside shoulders, a grassed median, updated turn lanes, and five new intersections or roundabouts with pedestrian and bicycle trails/sidewalks. The project will also include updated open ditch drainage with cross drains and new storage ponds, floodplain compensation areas, lighting, landscaping, new signing and pavement markings and utility relocations.

Rehabilitation and Storm-Hardening of the Manasota Key Bascule Bridge, Sarasota County
Approved: $2,980,000
Funds will support the strengthening and hardening of the bridge, enhancing the resiliency of critical infrastructure to future storm events and projected sea level rise.

Englewood Coastal Infringement Stormwater Improvements, Sarasota County
Approved: $3,135,000
Funds will support the installation of stormwater management infrastructure in a low-lying portion of Englewood to provide adequate drainage and prevent future flooding of nearby roads and properties. Proposed mitigation measures will provide the required capacity increase of the stormwater system for the identified roads, reducing the risk of future damages and loss of service events, and providing increased protection against flooding.

Carlton Water Treatment Plant Switchgear Improvements and Generator, Sarasota County
Approved: $745,000
Funds will support Phase I design and Phase II construction to rehabilitate the power generation and distribution infrastructure supporting the T. Mabry Carlton Water Treatment Plant (Carlton WTP).

Carlton Water Treatment Plant Infrastructure Retrofit - High Service Pumps, Sarasota County
Approved: $420,000
Funds will support design and construction activities for the rehabilitation of the T. Mabry Carlton Water Treatment Plant (Carlton WTP) high-service pumps. These upgrades will enhance the plant’s reliability and capacity, ensuring its viability for future population growth, and mitigating the potential impacts of hurricanes, drought, and wildfires.

Selected Project September 10, 2024

On September 10, 2024, the board convened to discuss the Multifamily Affordable Housing Program and the remaining funding allocation. The following project has been selected by the commission to execute a subrecipient agreement.

Phillippi Creek Dam Removal, Sarasota County
Approved: $721,592
Funds will support the removal of a deteriorating 1950 dam barrier along a 600-meter section of Phillippi Creek in northwest Sarasota County. The obsolete structure has caused sediment buildup, reduced water flow and increased flood risks. Its removal will restore natural stormwater flow, reduce erosion and improve flood resilience. Modeling suggests it could remove 142 homes from the 100-year floodplain. This would prevent repetitive flooding and reduce financial losses. The project is essential for protecting the community and enhancing the creek’s ecosystem.
