Phillippi Creek
Dam Removal

Infrastructure in Sarasota County

Date Selected:

September 10, 2024

Approved Funding:

$721,592

Project Agreement:

N/A

Funds will support the removal of a deteriorating 1950 dam barrier along a 600-meter section of Phillippi Creek in northwest Sarasota County. The obsolete structure has caused sediment buildup, reduced water flow and increased flood risks. Its removal will restore natural stormwater flow, reduce erosion and improve flood resilience. Modeling suggests it could remove 142 homes from the 100-year floodplain. This would prevent repetitive flooding and reduce financial losses. The project is essential for protecting the community and enhancing the creek’s ecosystem.
